What is a vaporetto?
A vaporetto is a public water bus. It follows a numbered route and calls at designated stops, rather like a bus on land. Boats connect parts of Venice and, depending on the service, places around the lagoon. A water taxi is a different kind of service: it is hired separately and is not the same as a public water bus.
From shore to boat
- Find the stop. Look for the stop name and the signs for the line and direction you need. A stop can have more than one boarding point.
- Check your ticket. Make sure it covers your journey and follow the validation instructions before boarding.
- Wait for your boat. Check the line number and destination displayed at the pier and on the vessel. Let passengers get off before you board.
- Keep track of your stop. Follow the stop names along the way and allow room for others to move through the boat.
Leave room for the journey
Water transport is part of the city’s everyday life, not just a sightseeing ride. Times and boarding arrangements can change, and busy stops may have queues. Allow extra time for connections, particularly when travelling with luggage or to a fixed appointment.
